Made in Wirral: Free Creative Writing and Arts Workshops for Adult Beginners
Welcome to the introductory post about our new project for adult beginners which forms part of Wirral being the Liverpool City Region Borough of Culture for 2024.
This project is entirely funded by Arts Council England plus support in kind from Wirral Libraries.
The aims of this project are to help people with little or no writing experience write a short story of around 1500 words which can then be added to a published anthology, displayed online and in Wirral Libraries and read out at a special storytelling celebration event in late 2024.
As well as holding creative writing workshops we are also delivering art sessions to help people create an illustration for their story.
All in all, we want to give people the experience, skills and knowhow to continue their writing journey and hopefully become published authors.
Please note that this project is for people based in, or close by, to Wirral.
When are the workshops taking place?
There are three 6 week courses of creative writing workshops.
Wallasey Central Library, Mondays 10.30am to 12pm from Monday 10th June for 6 weeks.
Online, Wednesdays 7pm to 8.30pm from Wednesday 12th June for 6 weeks.
Birkenhead Central Library, Thursdays 2.30pm to 4pm from Thursday 13th June for 6 weeks.
Primarily this is a writing course and during 6 week workshops we will look at the following:
1. How to find inspiration for a story
2. How to set scenes
3. How to build and show characters
4. Plots, planning stories and dilemmas
5. Building suspense and tension
6. Titles, hooks and how to revise and edit.
All writing workshops will be led by local author Charlie Lea. Each week we will send over a worksheet for people to read and use during the sessions.
Following on from these workshops people taking part will have the summer holidays to write a short story inspired by Wirral (for example, it's people, heritage and geography) and will have the opportunity to meet Charlie for one to one sessions to help with their writing.
Creative Art Workshops
In September, Nicola from Imagine Attic will deliver a series of art workshops to help people design an illustration to go with their story in the anthology.
Here are some examples of illustrations from the 2021 project.
Anthology and Storytelling Event
If you write a short story it can be included into the published anthology. You will receive a free copy of it plus extra copies will be added to Wirral Libraries catalogue for others to take out and enjoy.
We will also deliver spoken word sessions to help people develop storytelling skills ready for the storytelling celebration in autumn 2024 where people will have the opportunity to read out some of their story to an audience.
